KUSHEL, DAN, JIUAN-JIUAN CHEN, AND LUISA CASELLA. "SMALL SCALE REFERENCE PLATES FOR CONSERVATION DOCUMENTATION OF PHOTOGRAPHS"


Abstract

This paper describes the construction of a photographic reference plate for use in conservation documentation. The plaque includes a gray scale and primary (cyan, magenta, and yellow) and secondary color (red, green, and blue) patches from an X-Rite ColorChecker®, a lighting indicator associated with a photogrammetric indicator, a size scale, and an area for object identfication, date, and treatment stage.

Dan Kushel taught documentation and examination in the ARP from 1999 to 2009. Jiuan-Jiuan Chen taught treatment in the ARP from 2003 to 2007 and was in charge of the ARP curriculum from 2005 to 2007. Luisa Casella was an ARP fellow from 2005 to 2007. The design complies with recommended practices for photographic documentation described in the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) Commentaries to the Guideline for Practices and with suggested procedures in The AIC Guide to Digital Photography and Conservation Documentation. Currently, Dan is the Distinguished Teaching Professor of Documentation and Examination at the Art Conservation Program at Buffalo State College in Buffalo, New York. J Jiuan-jiuan Chen is a conservator at Paul Messier Conservation LLC in Boston, Massachusetts. Luisa Casella is an Andrew W. Mellon Fellow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, New York.
