Abstract
This research project is an attempt to better characterize 19th century photographic papers with regard to their manufacturing methods and chemical content. XRF was used to analyze the imaging materials to understand the variations better. Kaiser had shown that XRF could be used to distinguish cotton (a seed fiber) from flax (a bast fiber) by the relative quantities of calcium and potassium as well as the presence or absence of chlorine. An attempt was made in this project to try to extend Kaiser's method to include additional fiber sources. This method shows promise, but requires further refinement.
