ZAPONLACQUER ON DAGUERREOTYPES. Historical Protective Coatings in the Albertina Photo Collection

VOL. 11 (2010), NO. 1

The daguerreotype is the first successful photographic process and was used from 1839to approximately 1855. The Albertina Museum in Vienna houses one of the biggest and most important holdings of early Austrian photography, respective daguerreotypes, by acquiring the photo collection of the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt as a permanent loan. In this study, these daguerreotypes were examined and evaluated from the perspective of a special interest in treatments involving the use of Zapon lacquer, a cellulose nitrate protective coating that had been used in this collection four decades ago. Article research, a survey of the collection and scientific examination were all undertaken to identify both the materials used in previous treatments and the current condition of the photographs. Removal of the Zapon lacquer coating was successfully performed and revealed that the plates underneath were well protected from the environment.
